European Champions in Boys Cadet Double!

The STIGA player Anton Källberg and his companion Simon Berglund of Sweden won the cadet doubles title at the Youth European Youth Championships in Vienna. The Swedes beat the polish team Zatowska/Werecki in three straight games in the finals.

- We played very disciplined and controlled, Anton Källberg said after the match. We lost to them in Polish Open earlier this spring, but today they had no chance.

The score in the finals was 11-9, 11-7, 11-8. Convincing.

And how does it feel to be European Champion?

- Quite allright, Källberg, borned 1997, smiles.

The finals was the easy part for the Swedish team during the tournament. In the semi´s againt the French team Ruiz/Seyfried the Swedes actually were more or less out of the competition. After being down 1-2 in games, the French geared up and won 11-2, and lead 9-3 in the fifth and decisive game. The support from the Swedish colony on the stands were still on but no one really thought there was a possibility to turn to victory. But all of a sudden the French boys started to miss, it looked a bit strange that the safety all of a sudden seemed gone.

One ball after another got to the Swedes and all of a sudden the tension came back into the match. After winning seven balls in a row Källberg and Berglund all of a sudden had a match point. Källberg tested a long service with topspin, that Seyfried had shown he had problem with earlier in the match. But this time the French youngster was not surprised by the bounce and killed it immediately with a strong forehand. The French came back and not until the fourth match point the Swedes could raise their arms in the air. 15-13.

- We started to variate our game better, Anton Källberg explains. We had tried to play short on the receives almost all the time, which the French team started to read too easily. But when we were down we put the ball long now and then. This made them coming wrongly to the ball when attacking, they became a bit insecure where we should place our receives and our attacks.

- And at the end I think they became quite nervous too.

This was the first European Youth Championships for Anton Källberg. It ended with a quarter final in teams, a quarter finals in Singles and gold in doubles.

- In teams we had higher expectations and also missed two match points in the doubles leading 2-0 against Austria. In singles I met the final winner Cassain from France, won the first game but then really had no chance. He was too good for me this time. But because of the gold I leave Vienna with a very good feeling inside.
